Winter in Oberammergau
Winter Memories from my hometown

About Me

I was born in Oberammergau, Germany. Look for links to beautiful webpages if you want to make a virtual visit there!
After graduating from the "Mathematisches Naturwissenschaftliches Gymnasium" in Murnau, south of Munich, I became a flight attendant for Lufthansa. Foreign languages have fascinated me since I grew up in Germany and I still look to perfect the ones needed for our travels. Since 1975 I have lived in Colorado. In 1988, I received my teaching certificate for Elementary Education, and MS (Math & Science) from UNC in Greeley and enjoyed being a substitute teacher for 16 years. My main subject requests were for English, German, French and Spanish, art and photography, math and science. Since my retirement I now have more time to travel, the arts, photography, and teaching classes on the Natural History of Butterflies with my husband, Paul Opler (more info at his blog).

My art work includes wooden signs with a router, designing business cards, children portraits, and tole painting. In the winter of 2012-2013 I joined the Northern Colorado Woodcarvers Club and started to make wood carvings, really enjoying creating Cottonwood Bark Cottages, especially the Rapunzel Castle for our granddaughter in Montana. Check occasional updates for new creations....
I have added nature photography to my portfolio and use my images in our power point presentations. We have been teaching classes for SNFC (part of SFSU) on the Natural History of the Butterflies of the Sierra Nevada, CA, since 1998. In summer of 2019 we are already scheduled to teach summer classes there, as well as for the Rocky Mountain Conservancy about the butterflies in Rocky Mountain National Park. In combination with our classes I make my presentation on the amazing Migration of the Monarch. We also offer presentations to group meetings about our travels in the US, Europe, Central and South America, and to China.
My son Hans-Eric and his wife graduated from MSU in Bozeman. They are living in a small Montana town, where HE works with his father on their ranch, and they have made us very proud grandparents. We also have three grandsons in France and were very lucky to have two of them spend some time living with us and attending school here in Colorado.
